Totally unaware that the rather anonymous-looking V50 was available is Manual-T5-AWD form! Nicer wheels, too.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
What's the verdict on these things, anyway?

I’ve heard bad things about the T5 in the S40/V50. Not sure why it would be worse than elsewhere given that it should be more or less the same engine Volvo used in other cars. Was a moot point for me, as when I was car shopping, all the S40/V50s I saw were the NA 2.4s instead, I would have been interested to try it with the T5.

Not bad cars, really. Certainly worlds better than the S40/V40 they replaced, those were miserable shitboxes. Especially with a manual, I’d daily one of these. Good sleepers, the T5s haul ass.

What if two people browsing Craigslist could “bump” into each other if they crossed paths, so to speak?
Personally I’d go up to a V70 T5 manual wagon of the same generation, ooooor if space wasn’t a concern a C30. I know it’s not a manual, but look at that C30.

Ah, but even that V70 is still FWD.

Ohhhhh I missed the AWD. Welp, guess you’d have to jump up to an R!

Theyre essentially the same as the S40 and C30 (no awd for the latter of course.) I think. I looked into them briefly but they’re all super high mileage by now, it seems.
As far as I remember the consensus was that the engine is pretty bulletproof but you will pay a premium in parts because Volvo.

Or an XC70, if he can stomach some lift and cladding.

My first-gen S40 was great, I don’t know where you’d get that it was a miserable shitbox. Fun little car.

Could you get a stick shift XC?

Hmm, probably not (at least in the US) , I guess I was ignoring that part. I’m honestly not sure how much difference a stick shift would make on these anyway, though I guess you’d have a better idea than me.

I'm almost positive the xc70 only came in an auto.

Wait... Did the XC even have a turbo? I’m not a huge fan of the body cladding so it’s already a no for me. Guess he needs the insanely rare Awd, manual, turbo 850 wagon

Rats. Ah well, I think the standard v70 is much better looking

The XC70 definitely came with a turbo, I’m not sure about the V70 XC though (
edit:
just looked and Wikipedia says “In the US only the 2.4L turbo engine together with an automatic gearbox was available.” regarding the V70 XC)
.

Remember the guy with the brown E550 couple from the St Helens meet? He has pretty much this exact car as a gas mileage "beater". It's still very nice. Keeps the miles off the nicer cars, keeps the nicer cars out of crappy weather, gets better mileage than V8 benzes, and doesn't suck out your soul to drive.

I noticed one in real life like 5 years ago and thought “I’d like to own that” it was white with some nice white snowflake wheels. I also LOVE that waterfall dash design dated as it is now.
But I’ve never heard anyone say anything good about the s40/v50. Just that they don’t live up to the Volvo name and are more like a MK4 VW as fare as QC, and reliability go.

Not many made with the manual and AWD. The engine is bullet proof. Parts are easy to find and you can shop around for cheaper Mazda or Ford parts if you want. I never found the P1 Volvo parts to be expensive so I don’t know why everyone always says that.
In order to get AWD and a manual the only other wagon Volvo offered was the P2 V70 R from 2001-2007 (I think those dates are correct) and that’s a whole other price point, generally.

Im leaning towards a 2.4 n/a s40 manual for my next car once I get my tax moneys. The t5 scares me reliability wise, and I dunno if you could get a n/a v50 with a stick, but if I happen to find one hell yeah. Fwd is better for me anyways though less to break and it's just a commuter.

I’ve seen a few on CL from time to time, but I just can’t get into them.
They are very thirsty, well under 20 mpg. Probably something like 16-18 if you’re lucky. They also have a timing belt. I just don’t suspect them to be as reliable as Toyota.
There is also no way to replace the radio.
